Shinfield Baptist Church; Celebrating 100 years Most people and communities enjoy celebrating special moments such as birthdays, marriages and dates of national importance, like the end of a war or the beginning of independence. Churches throughout the world have just celebrated the dramatic events of Easter 2000 years ago, when Christ was crucified for our wrong doing but was miraculously raised from the dead, thereby offering all of us eternal life. And of course there would be no Easter without Christmas, which most of us celebrate as well! On the first Sunday after Pentecost 100 years ago, a group of Christians began Shinfield Free Church by holding their first service above the cycle shop (now demolished) in the village. Remarkably, within 18 months they secured a plot of land and built a meeting room for worship. Their considerable investment in time and resources, has been rewarded as a worshipping community has been sustained by God over the past 100 years and we still meet in the same place today. It is great to celebrate the start of the church 100 years on, not least because we are still following in the founders footsteps and today still benefiting from their sacrifice, vision and determination to act for the good of the community. Celebrating helps us to preserve a sense of identity and acknowledges that the road to the future runs through the past. We are fortunate to have a rich heritage! We invite you to join with us in celebrating. Watch this space for further details! Rev Richard Glover
